The Institution was formed in 2006 by the merger of The Institution
of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the Institution of Incorporated
Engineers (IIE). Both institutions with a long history (IEE founded in
1870 and the IIE in 1998 from several mergers) of championing the cause
of the practising engineering professional. The new Institution has a
combined membership of nearly 150,000 world wide, of which some 35,000
are resident outside the UK. Recognising changes in the nature of work
in that many members run their own businesses, the Consultants
Professional Group was set up in 1999 (IEE) and rapidly established
itself as a leader in the development of the modern IET. Some 10,000
members have expressed an interest or involvement in consultancy, and to
date nearly 4,000 have registered with the Consultants group. In
addition some 8,000 non-members have registered with the TPN via the web
site. In line with the general restructuring of the IET, we are now
known as the Consultants Technical & Professional Network (CTPN) and
have representation at both national and local levels of the IET's
organisation.
