CIPD has 115,000 members working in personnel and training. It
achieved Chartered status in 2000. It has about 4,500 members who work
as mainly self-employed consultants or trainers. There are 47 branches
throughout the UK and Ireland. It is a registered charity, but its
commercial wing is responsible for the two largest management

CIPD has a register of consultants who provide in-company
consultancy, but this covers relatively few people and is run by the
commercial wing. My main interest is those who operate as mainly solo
self-employed, who our research has shown need improved networking and
marketing skills in particular. There is no national register as such of
these people but branches are being encouraged to set up groups for
them; we now have about 14, with at least as many currently considering
establishing them.
